Events & Seminars • STR To Present Seminars On TIA Toy Safety
Certification
ProgramSM STR will
present a seminar series on the TIA Toy Safety Certification
Program SM (TSCP). This seminar will
provide an in-depth review of the proposed TIA TSCP and the
pending Federal Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)
Reform Act. Participants will learn how to prepare for,
implement and comply with TSCP requirements and the CPSC
Reform Act. Seminars will be held in LA on July 15, Chicago on

• Shuster Laboratories To Exhibit At IFT 2008
Shuster Laboratories will exhibit at the Institute of Food
Technologists (IFT) Expo, booth #1109, being held June

Safety Standard Forum 2008 In May 2008, Mr.
Kevin Chan, Assistant Manager of Physical and Mechanical
Laboratory, STR HK, presented a seminar on the recent changes
of safety standard for toys and children’s products at the Hong

Toy Industry • Updated Worldwide Requirements For Toys
Containing Magnets Childhood injuries caused by
the ingestion of loose magnets and magnetic components of toys
are causing increasing concern. Two or more ingested magnets
can link together inside the body, such as across intestines,
sometimes resulting in serious injury or even death. Following
the lead of ASTM F963-07, several countries are adopting new
regulations and safety standards governing the use of magnets

Accreditations • STR India Obtains Prestigious Marks &
Spencer Test Laboratory Accreditation STR India
has been accredited as an official apparel testing laboratory
by Marks & Spencer. This accreditation enables STR India
to conduct a wide range of physical and chemical testing
including color fastness, durability wash for garments and
components, assessment of non iron fabrics and products,
thermal stability, tensile strength and many other properties
for Marks & Spencer's apparel categories. Read

Food/Drug • June 25, 2008 FDA Deadline For Dietary
Supplement Compliance With Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)
Dietary Supplement manufacturers with 500 or
more employees are required to be in compliance with GMP
regulation by June 25, 2008. Manufacturers with less than 500
employees, but more than 20 have to comply by June 2009. It is
anticipated that many retailers will expect their suppliers to
demonstrate evidence of diligent progress toward compliance in
advance of these regulatory deadlines. Read

• Administration Proposes Additional Funding
For FDA To Improve Food And Medical Product
Safety The Bush administration is asking for an
additional $275 million for the Food and Drug Administration
(FDA) in its budget request for fiscal year 2009.This
additional amount will assist FDA to reduce threats to the
U.S. food supply, expand FDA’s international presence, and
increase technical assistance to help ensure that foreign and
domestic food facilities comply with food safety standards. Read

RoHS Updates • Exemption Of Flame Retardant Deca-BDE,
Annulled By European Court Of Justice On April
1, 2008, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) annulled the
decabromodiphenyl ether (Deca-BDE) exemption to the EU
Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive dated
October 13, 2005 (2005/717/EC). Read

Lead/Chemical • Massachusetts Postpones Effective Date Of
Implementation For Children's Jewelry
Regulations The Massachusetts Department of
Public Health (MDPH) has postponed the effective date for
implementation of 105 CMR 650.021, regulations relative to
lead in children's jewelry, from June 13, 2008 to October 17,
2008. Read

• Maryland Prohibits Children's Products
Containing Lead On May 13, 2008, the governor of
Maryland approved House Bill 62 (Enrolled Chapter 483). The
act, known as Lead-Containing Children's Products
?Prohibition, takes effect July 1, 2008. This law prohibits
the manufacture, sale, offer for sale, importation, or
distribution, by any means, of a children's product determined
to be a lead-containing product. Read

Standards Updates • European Committee For Standardization
Publishes New Standard For Non-Domestic
Tables Further to the publication of EN
15373:2007 and EN 14703:2007 last year for non-domestic
seating, the Technical Committee CEN/TC 207 "Furniture" of the
European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has published
another new European Standard, EN 15372:2008 for the safety
requirements and test methods of non-domestic tables. Read

• International/National Standards Update For
Pen Caps The British Standards Institute has
published new edition of the standards BS 7272 Parts 1& 2
which came into effect on 30 April 2008. BS 7272 is a widely
adopted national safety standard specifying requirements to
reduce the risk of asphyxiation from caps (BS 7272-1) and from
end enclosure (BS 7272-2) for writing and marking instruments.
